Man machining part

Take Your Child To Work Day

A lot of stapling, typing, paper folding and back-to-back meetings in cold conference rooms. Back in my day, the only thing I learned from attending "Take Your Child To Work Day" with a friend's mom was how mundane office work can sometimes be. But, as we know, desk jobs are important and necessary.

Earnest's version of "Take Your Child To Work Day" on April 23 incorporated a visit to our Manufacturing and Engineering Center, where our machinists mill, drill, turn, weld, slot, patch, cut and chamfer. The kids got a front-row seat to the get-your-hands-dirty world of manufacturing - specifically for Earnest, the industrial fasteners machining process. It was by far the most popular part of the day. Our marketing manager's son, who has hopes of becoming an engineer, is still talking about it -- and the realization that engineered fasteners are practically in everything. We're thinking that no matter how screen-obsessed kids are today, they're still fascinated by hands-on activities and opportunities to get their hands dirty.
